The true meaning of yoga

Throughout its 5,000+ year history, yoga has never been more popular. With more people doing yoga than ever before, it’s surprising that few people know what it really means.

The truth is, yoga was never about manipulating your body into impossible poses, wearing activewear or gaining social media followers. It’s about connecting with your inner self.

What exactly is yoga?

If you asked ten yogis this question, you’d most likely get different answers. The reason is, yoga has been labelled and packaged in so many different ways, its original meaning has been lost.

Translated from Sanskrit, yoga means: “to yoke or unite”. Contrary to popular opinion, this union doesn’t refer to the union of mind and body. Rather, it refers to uniting your consciousness with Divine consciousness. In other words, yoga is a true knowledge of the oneness of yourself with the source of all life.

What is the true purpose of yoga?

As you may have guessed, yoga has a much deeper purpose than toning your body, or even uniting your mind and spirit. The ultimate purpose of this ancient practice is to discover and harness the infinite potential of the human mind and the eternal self.

Yoga is the lifelong pursuit of your true self. Through continual practice, you will stop identifying with negative thoughts and feelings that cause physical and emotional pain.

You will go into the deepest recesses of your being to find your inner self. This way, you will discover the ultimate source of all energy and creativity.

By practising ancient asanas, pranayama, bandha, mantras, and more, you will experience true bliss, and ultimate freedom from suffering.

What do you learn through yoga?

There is so much more to yoga than gaining physical and emotional strength. It can also teach you some of life’s most valuable lessons, such as:

* Balance and focus are crucial to help you move forward in life.

* Nothing lasts forever, so focus on what is happening right now.

* You are very important. Take time to nurture your body, soul and spirit.

* There are always things to be grateful for, so treasure every moment.
