Yoga retreats: are they worth it?

At Mukti Freedom Yoga, this is one of the most common questions we are asked. This is hardly surprising, as there are literally thousands of options to choose from.

Not every retreat is right for everyone. So, before choosing a yoga retreat, there are several questions you should ask yourself.

#1 Why do you want to go on the retreat?

For some people, a yoga retreat is an opportunity to explore exotic locales. So, you may explore the jungles of Costa Rica or the pristine beauty of Bali, while incorporating some yoga sessions into the trip. Or, you may want to stay closer to home.

#2 What are you hoping to gain from the experience?

The answer to this question will help you determine which kind of retreat is right for you. If you’re not interested in the typical “yoga lifestyle”, for instance, you may choose one which incorporates a lot of social activities.

However, if you want to get in touch with your inner self, you may choose a more traditional option. These kinds of yoga retreats involve an emphasis on workouts, no alcohol and no meat.

#3 Is it a retreat or a holiday?

If you’re going to take a holiday, you may want to invite your spouse, partner or friends. However, if you’re going on the retreat to rediscover yourself, it’s the perfect opportunity for some “me time”.

You’ll have the chance to reflect on your life and the changes you want to make. To complete the experience, you can even choose clean, detoxifying foods.

#4 What is your budget?

There are options to suit almost every budget. You can opt for the more affordable ashram style accommodations, or the more luxurious spa options. Before deciding which yoga retreat to go on, be realistic about your budget and your reasons for taking the trip in the first place.

#5 Do you have the time?

Although it sounds daunting, stepping away from the frantic pace of modern life can fill you with a sense of peace. So, a yoga retreat can be absolutely worth the time and money if you come back with clarity, and are well rested.

If you can’t leave life behind, choose a mini-retreat – like having a massage, facial or even attending a restorative yoga class.
